How it works

Find your name. Then build your business.

We run four checks on every name before you see it — then guide you through everything you need to go from name to fully operational.

Step 01 · Generate

Name sourcing

Describe your idea and our AI generates brand-aligned candidates — or bring a name you already have in mind.

Step 02 · Domain

Domain availability

We query live global domain registries across your chosen extensions. Only names with available domains advance.

Step 03 · Federal

Trademark check

We run a live federal trademark search to filter out names already protected in your business category.

Step 04 · State

State entity check

Premium — runs on demand. Confirms no existing entity has registered your chosen name in any US state.

▶ See it work — from an idea to a cleared name with live domain prices, in under a minute.

How we compare

Most name tools check one thing. RareName checks four.

Almost every business name generator is owned by a domain registrar, a formation service, or a logo maker — so it only checks the slice it sells. RareName has no niche to protect, so it checks all four.

Simple, fast, and it actually works. The SOS check before I committed to a name saved me from a headache I didn't even know was coming.

The web presence check alone is worth it. Found out my top name choice was already being used by a startup before I wasted money on registration.

Finally a tool built for founders, not lawyers. Ran three searches, found a name I loved, and had the domain registered the same day.

I had no idea how many names were already trademarked. RareName caught three conflicts in my first search. Genuinely saved me from a costly mistake.

FAQ

Checking business name availability

How do I check if a business name is available?+

RareName runs four checks on a name at once: it queries live domain registries for your chosen extensions, searches the USPTO federal trademark database, scans for an existing web presence, and links you to the right state Secretary of State registry to confirm no entity already holds the name. You describe your idea (or enter a name), and you get results in about 60 seconds.

What is a Secretary of State business name check?+

Every US state keeps a public register of business entities (LLCs, corporations) formed in that state. Before you file, you need to confirm no existing entity already uses your name in your state — two businesses can't register the same name there. RareName deep-links you straight to the correct state's official registry so you can verify it for free.

Do I need a lawyer to clear a business name?+

Not to do the initial clearance. You can check domain availability, search the federal trademark database, and look up state registries yourself — which is what RareName automates. A trademark attorney is worth it later if you plan to file a federal trademark or you're entering a crowded category, but you don't need one to rule out names that are obviously taken.

How is RareName different from a domain search or Namechk?+

Domain-only tools tell you if the URL is free, but a free domain says nothing about trademarks or state registrations — founders routinely incorporate a name only to hit a trademark conflict later. RareName checks domain, federal trademark, web presence, and state registries together, so a name that clears is one you can actually build a brand around.
